Fostering Change: 13-Year-Old Benjamin's Efforts to Support Children in Need

As Benjamin’s bar mitzvah approached, he knew he wanted to do something meaningful to mark the occasion.

In Jewish tradition, a mitzvah project is an important part of the coming-of-age celebration. It isn’t just about receiving gifts or having a big party—it is about doing something good for others, something that will make the world a better place.

For his mitzvah project, Benjamin decided he wanted to support Oakland Family Services’ foster care program. He asked his bar mitzvah guests to help keep children warm with donations of winter coats, hats, and gloves. Guests could also contribute money toward necessary supplies for youth in foster care.

The results were impressive. Benjamin collected 26 coats, 22 hats, and 19 pairs of gloves. He also raised $1,391.

When Benjamin and his dad sat down to discuss the outcome of the bar mitzvah, they talked about the possibility of using gifted money to match the donations that were raised. Benjamin asked if he could give a higher amount, because he wanted to help more people.

In addition to the $1,391 he raised, Benjamin donated $1,610 from his bar mitzvah money, bringing the total to $3,001. He hopes the extra dollar that makes it an odd number will be symbolic to someone else and inspire them to donate more.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Benjamin for his incredible efforts in supporting children in foster care. At just 13 years old, Benjamin’s compassion is truly inspiring, and his commitment to creating positive change is a shining example of how one person, no matter their age, can make a profound impact.

Thank you, Benjamin, for showing us all the power of kindness and community.
